Bironas made a name for himself becoming thte Titans' second leading scorer of all-time and owning the fourth-best field goal percentage in NFL history with an 85.7 percent rate. He made headlines in recent years after dating and then marrying Rachel Bradshaw, the daughter of Hall of Fame quarterback Terry Bradshaw.
Nashville police said Bironas died in a single-car accident. The kicker's official Twitter page later confirmed the news.
From the Associated Press:
Metro Nashville Police said Bironas, 36, lost control on a curve in his 2009 GMC Yukon Denali and crashed after 11 p.m. less than a mile from home. Police said in a statement on the department website that his SUV was speeding when it went off the road and hit a line of trees before coming to a stop upside down in a culvert.
Bironas was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. Police said there was no evidence of alcohol or drugs at the scene.
Bironas had an offseason tryout with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and reportedly tried out for the Detroit Lions just earlier this week. Bironas once kicked a 60-yard field goal to help the Titans beat the Indianapolis Colts in 2006 and also booted a single-game record eight field goals against Houston in 2007.
Bironas and Rachel Bradshaw were married in June.
